Agnes of God

20 February, 2018

by John Pielmeier
arranged by Geneva Holloman

Sister Agnes, a twenty-one-year-old nun, is accused of strangling her newborn child and discarding it into the wastebasket in her convent room. Sister Agnes professes no knowledge of the baby’s birth or death.

Dr. Martha Livingstone, the court- appointed psychiatrist, wants to discover the truth of the matter hidden behind Agnes's veiled and cloistered mind. A psychological war ensues between Dr. Livingstone and the Mother Superior over Agnes's mental and spiritual health, and the play becomes a collection of contrasts between science and religion, between the temporal and spiritual, and between facts and faith.
