The School for Wives is one of the great French classics. A play becomes a classic when it is as relevant in any time and place as it was when it was created. Unfortunately for women, the play is still relevant today. The genius of Molière is to show a serious, even dramatic situation in comedy form. The play depicts a character who is so intimidated by femininity that he resolves to marry his young, naïve ward and proceeds to make clumsy advances to this purpose. It raised some outcry from the public, which seems to have recognized Molière as a bold playwright who would not be afraid to write about controversial issues. Even if some parts of the play are rather dark, the audience should be laughing all the way through, and this is the challenge of The School for Wives!
GEDS encourages everyone to audition for its shows at all levels of experience. Our directors are looking for people who bring their own unique life experiences to the role. Mother tongue and nationality need not prevent you being cast; even age or gender can sometimes be flexible according to the needs of the play. GEDS serves a diverse international community and we aspire to reflect that richness in our activities and events.
